CMRS Credentialed Membership: Why it Works for You
As an interpreter of MRI studies, how can you protect the integrity of your practice? Answer: CMRS credentialed membership. The professional requirements for CMRS credentialed membership were developed by physicians highly regarded for their expertise in magnetic resonance imaging. The purpose and effect of these requirements are to differentiate the experienced interpreter of MRI studies from the casual reader based on experience and knowledge, two elements critical to competency in any field.
CMRS credentialed membership is backed by a meticulous application process and a stringent, random audit program. The documentation required to apply for CMRS credentialed membership encourages development of a personal system of quality assurance, which may prove valuable in the complex environment of managed care with its demands for documented medical credibility.
The continuing medical education requirements for CMRS credentialed membership provide a fundamental knowledge base and also meet or exceed industry and national society accepted standards for MRI. Thus, the documentation and verification process for credentialed membership may provide an additional "green light" in the process of provider endorsement.
Finally, one simple reason to apply for credentialed membership stands above all, experience and knowledge, as documented in the CMRS professional credentialing requirements, lead to more efficient, cost-effective, quality patient care.
The CMRS Board of Trustees encourages all eligible physician members to apply for credentialed membership. If you are planning to apply for CMRS credentialed membership, please contact the CMRS office at 813-806-1080, toll-free at 888-350-3677 or credentialing@CMRS.com with any questions you may have or to have an application sent to you.
Initial credentialed membership requires documentation of 1,000 magnetic resonance cases personally interpreted by you and 60 Category 1 CME credit hours in MR-specific topics completed within the 24-month period prior to submitting your application. For Neuro, Ortho, or Body MR applications, at least 30 Category 1 CME credits must be specific to that area.
Experience:
General MR: 1,000 cases divided as follows: 300 neuro, 300 Ortho, 400 any combination (ortho spine cases may count for up to 45 cases or 15%)
Neuro MR: 1,000 neurological cases
Ortho MR: 1,000 orthopedic cases (ortho spine cases may count for up to 200 or 20%)
Body MR: 1,000 body cases
Correlation:
If audited, 20 cases will be randomly selected from the 1,000 case reports submitted by the applicant for which the applicant will be required to provide documented clinical, pathological, or surgical proof, or as an alternative, the applicant may provide the MR films and patient history. Should the films be provided, a subcommittee of the Board of Trustees will be responsible for conducting a QA audit of your cases.
Recredentialing Period:
The professional requirements for renewal of credentialed membership are admissible only for the 24-month period directly following the effective date of your current credential. The number of cases and the dates of your CME courses must fall within that period. If you do not meet the renewal requirements in this time period, you may then apply for a new credential, using the original professional credentialing requirements, when you have met those requirements within any 24-month period.
